Our Story

byACRE was founded in Copenhagen, Scandinavia’s design hub, with a mission to break down the stigma related to reduced mobility and to help those it serves maintain an active lifestyle without compromise.

We design mobility aids for people, not patients.

The founders on byACRE’s story

A new age of assistive walking devices

Mobility is one of the core values in modern life. It’s a challenge for both older adults and adults with disabilities that have impacted their mobility and lifestyle.

The current market for assistive walking devices has failed to adequately support this community, by producing ageist messages and outdated models that denote feelings of dependence and fragility – an inaccurate representation of today’s thriving older adult community.

Since 2017, our mindful designs have won some of the world’s most prestigious awards in design and innovation, including the 2019 Red Dot Design Award, the 2017 IF Design Award and the Danish Design Award.

“by ACRE” is our quality seal. It’s rooted in the words ‘Active’ and ‘Re-Habitare’ – the Latin word for Back to Life.

“It was obvious there was a lack of design in this industry – and we very quickly found out that this was because the way the existing companies looked at users as patients – not people with hopes and dreams. We simply took age out of the equation”.

– Anders Berggreen, co-founder and CEO of byACRE

What we believe in

  • The de-stigmatization of rollators to make it easier for people to use them

  • High quality products without compromises in terms of both use and design

  • A continuous dialogue with, and inclusion of, the target group

Interviews with our founder

Anders Berggreen, our co-founder and CEO, has, in interviews, talked more in-depth of how he came up with the idea of byACRE and what it has been like to work within the mobility aids industry.

In connection with winning the FedEx Small Business Grand Prize, our CEO Anders Berggreen was interviewed by FedEx. In this interview, he explained the beginning of byACRE and shared his top three lessons from disrupting an industry:

1. Put yourself in your customers’ shoes

2. Look outside the industry for design inspiration

3. Find and nurture your early adopters

A Stylish Rollator. Really?

As part of the article “Universal Design Targets Products for All Ages” for Plastics Engineering, journalist Robert Grace interviewed our CEO and founder, Anders Berggreen about byACRE’s design philosophy:

“While gathering user’s experience, the byACRE team learned that the weight of the product was important to those customers. But manufacturers paid little attention to product weight.”
